Remember To Forget

SNAP Challenge

Mari Morris

As far back as I can remember I have always had a deep desire for progress in my life. Until things go wrong… that is.

When I look back, I see that my life is absolutely littered with examples of this. I remember one weekend in particular: I decided, "This weekend, you will do extra deep house cleaning. No excuses!"

I started with the kitchen. I cleaned the cupboards, counter tops, refrigerator, walls, baseboards, and finally the floors. I could not remember the last time that I had been so diligent and thorough with a task.

I was so happy with my progress! I told myself: "I should make some iced tea and sit down for a little break."

I made the tea in a one-gallon glass jug. And since it was still warm. I poured my tea over ice. (Finally, a chance to relax a bit before I continued my deep cleaning.)

I picked up the heavy glass jug and opened the refrigerator door to chill it.

Suddenly – the door swung back and slammed hard into the glass jug!

Oh SNAP!

There was iced tea and broken glass everywhere! Not only was all my hard work undone in just a second or two, but now the room was far messier than when I began!

That day, I started (and ended) my resolve with the kitchen. After that, It took me a very long time to entertain the same resolve again.

The very thought of the “kitchen incident" often caused me to sit right back down and not even try at all.

But over time, I began to see (and hear), my own speech and thought patterns:

"Every time I put my whole heart and effort into anything… everything always goes wrong!"

Wait a second!

Every time..., anything..., everything..., always...? Really…?

Why was I using this all or nothing language, as if I haven’t been far more Blessed than I could possibly deserve?

Sometimes it really pays to listen to yourself. Because the Scripture says: "Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks." Matthew 12:34 (KJV)

I realize now that I have been stacking these failures – brick by brick - into a monument that has kept me from the very progress that I had spent my life praying for.

What I really need is to "deep clean" my thoughts! Which brings a Scripture to mind:

This One Thing I do... forgetting the things that happened before, I continue to press toward the mark... Philippians 3:13-14.

Now when I say SNAP! This is what I will mean:

Stop

Negativity

And

Press…

And, I will tell myself... from Scripture:

Remember to Forget!
