as one
it lifts, corkscrews, falls right
shuffles like cards onto peeling branches of birch
lifts again
one starling—a single digit connected to the body
beauty, yes, she thinks, even as she walks away
resolved toward independence
tuck and dip, rise and fall—
far, skeptical heart travels
shadow follows underfoot
A symphony of opposites in the beating of the air
expand, contract
amplify, concentrate
freedom, security.
The starlings, she once read
kept their formation—not by fretting on the whole
but by navigating with the seven birds surrounding it
the goal to maintain equal distance
whatever the distance was
food sought—a broad swooping curve, short rise, rest, search
falcon spotted—tight barrel roll to the left
the individual, mark-worthy
the body, mesmerizing, purposeful
like carbon bits of waltzing coal.
On the crest of a hill, she hesitates
a solitary starling breaks away—but for a moment
opportunistic predator has its way
a mourning cry—reluctant spectators
a squawking—her pride
she turns, retraces mental resolutions, physical steps
passing beneath black umbrella
undeniably beautiful, each one
yet the group—the flock—Divine magnificence
a gift.
