This had been his dream for several years and he had applied with the CHP to no avail. He was qualified for the job, but they only had a certain number of positions open; his name was put in a lottery and not chosen. He applied again later, but got a letter stating that he was now too old. After applying, and getting hired he took the ‘next best’ position – a security guard at the state hospital. Scary! He worked there for 3 years. During this time, he applied at the local police department. He was not hired. A year and a half later, however, he got a phone call that would set the course of his life on the path he had chosen. They still had his application – would he consider joining them? They offered to pay for his schooling at the Police Academy. He already had some training since he was already in law enforcement, so only needed to complete 6 months at the Academy.
He and his wife talked it over and he decided to go for it. He also covered his decision with much prayer and knew this was the direction God was leading him.
He passed all the necessary requirements and started school in January of 2005. He not only received his schooling, but was also put on salary while attending the Academy.
I was still scared for him. Here he was taking this job when he is married and has 2 small children… what in the world was he thinking? It’s a scary world out there and now my brother was going to go into it carrying a gun? My mind couldn’t quite wrap around this concept.
In June of 2005, he became a rookie of the department. It was evident from his first day on the job that this was God’s plan. Two women of the community had been praying for more Christians on the police force, and now here was Glen, joining them. After awhile, Glen also began to experience spiritual opposition to being there. He had anxiety and fear that he had never before experienced. An easy-going, calm individual, this was very foreign to him. He learned very quickly the importance of prayer every day before going to work and the importance of putting on the full armor of God daily as well (Ephesians 6:10-18).
He has been there over a year now and is doing quite well. I have had to leave him in God’s hands, entrusting Him to the care of the One who loves him far more than I ever could. Knowing that God has Glen’s best interests at heart, I trust that He will lead him on the path of life, as Glen continues to seek God and His will for his life.
