“Ookies? What’s ookies gwammy?” He slowly struggled to his feet and toddled over to where his grandmother was pulling out various ingredients from her worn-out kitchen pantry.
“Cookies,” she said slowly “are sweet treats that you are going to help me make.” Jared’s blue eyes grew wild with excitement as she placed a small stool near the countertop and helped him up until he stood beside her surveying a wonderland filled with countless treasures.
“Now Jared, the same way we make cookies with different ingredients, God puts our lives together using different things.”
“God makes us like we makes ookies gwammy?”
“That’s right pumpkin. Now take this,” she measured out a big cup full of white flour. “This flour is like the Bible God give us to read each day so we can get to know him. Go ahead put it in the bowl.” She handed Jared the flour carefully. He quickly poured it into the giant bowl and was surprised by the puff of white smoke that followed. He sneezed shaking his curly blond head in the process.
“Now the sugar is those sweet moments of prayer that we get with the Lord. You know you can talk to God whenever you want Jared?” She poured the sugar into the bowl.
“I knows gwammy,” Jared said leaning over to look at the ingredients already in the bowl.
“Then God puts different situations in our life to make sure we become just the right person He wants us to be.” Jared watched as butter, eggs, salt, and vanilla were added.
“Then God mixes it all together.” She handed Jared a big wooden spoon and showed him how to stir. He put his whole heart and soul into it and within a few minutes was panting for breath.
“God must get tired!” Jared exclaimed as he watched his grandmother finish the job.
“Yes I suppose He must,” she said thoughtfully. “And now its time for one very special ingredient.” She pulled out a yellow bag and showed the contents to her curious observer.
“Chocwit!”
“That’s right pumpkin. These chocolate chips are like wonderful people that God puts in our lives to make them sweeter and help us through each day. It may be a neighbor or a friend or maybe a grandmother.”
“Like you!”
“That’s right sweetly, just like me.” She gave Jared a handful of chocolate chips and then poured the rest of its contents into the bowl. After a quick stir, Jared helped her place neat little balls of dough on the cookie sheets and they were in the oven.
“Now what?” Jared asked as his grandma helped him down from the stool.
“Now all we have to do is wait.” She made her way over to the rickety old kitchen bench and sat down wearily upon it. After several attempts, Jared pulled himself up beside her. They both sat as though deep in thought for quite a few minutes.
“What is the oven gwammy?”
“What?”
“Why does God use the oven to make people?” His grandmother sat for a moment with a frown upon her face.
“Well Jared, the oven is the hard times that God brings into our lives. They are the times that hurt the most. But God uses those times to make us into what He wants us to be…and He promises never to leave us.”
Ding!
Jared danced around the kitchen as his grandmother pulled out the cookie sheets and removed the cookies to cool. After a few minutes, she put a few of them on a plate and poured a glass of milk.
“Now Jared take your first bite and tell me if all the work we did was worth it.” Jarred opened his mouth as wide as he could and took one giant bite, which was soon followed by a huge smile that spread across his face.
“Oh it's worth is gwammy…it's worth it!”
“That’s great to hear pumpkin. Now take your milk and cookies into the living room and watch your TV show.” She watched him toddled his way out of the kitchen, almost spilling his milk on several occasions, until he was safely sitting on his little chair by the TV. He took another huge bite of the cookie and she smiled.
“It's worth it Lord…it's worth it.”
