We must lay a foundation true
Did Jesus die upon a cross
To take the place of me and you?
And was He human and divine
Sharing in the Trinity?
If "Yes" then on more trivial things
We can agree to disagree.
Do you believe the virgin birth?
That Jesus will return some day?
That He will come to fetch His Church?
That He requires us to pray?
And that He died and rose again?
And bears the scars that set us free?
Then let's not air our differences
Let's just agree to disagree.
Should I often speak in tongues?
Or should I speak in tongues at all?
Can a woman be an elder?
Should I pray beneath a shawl?
If we get the basics right
That Jesus died to set us free
Then on all these other matters
Let's agree to disagree.
The virgin birth, the scourge of sin,
That Jesus is both God and man,
The doctrine of the Trinity,
That Jesus died and rose again,
The afterlife, the Judgement Seat,
Reality of Heaven and Hell,
These are all beyond dispute
And keep the church alive and well
They are the truths that hold us fast
In a dynamic unity
Whereas in all the lesser things
We can agree to disagree.
When Jesus was about to die
He prayed to God most earnestly
That we, His church should all be one
From now and through eternity
And yet, so often in our sin
We focus on our differences
Denominational walls appear
And we all keep our distances
And yet if we could see God's heart
Those differences don't make us foes
God likes variety in us
We should rejoice in highs and lows
All of creation shouts to us
"Diversity in unity"
Then why not so within the church?
We can agree to disagree.
