My cell was dark and gloomy on the day they threw me in.
I saw no way of getting out...the consequence of sin.
So feeling sorry for myself, I settled my accounts.
Remorse, regrets and good intententions, there in large amounts.
My sentence handed down, I headed out to Calvary.
And there some Roman Soldiers crucified me to a tree.
The pain was awfull but I knew I'd got my just deserts.
There were two other guys with me and they were nursing similar hurts.
Now I'm nobody's fool you know. I've kept my powder dry.
And I'll be switched if I let anybody see me cry.
So I took up a taunt upon the guy there in the middle.
His crime was nothing like my own. It really was a riddle.
He claimed to be the Son of God. He'd come to set men free!
He'd come to bring the light of day. He'd come to carry me.
"If you're the Son of God" I said..."Save us and save yourself!"
He gave me no reply to this, a lesson on the shelf.
Time dragged away, the day was long, and on the left hand cross,
my partner nagged away at Him, but on me it was lost.
At once the thought came over me that this man did no wrong!
I shouted at that other soul to stop his stupid song!
I looked straight into eyes so clear that heaven must be crying,
and realized with great respect..."It is for me He's dying."
"Remember me, forgive me Lord for all my sins and lies."
"This day you will be with me when I enter Paradise."
The gloom departed, light appeared, I was no more a sinner.
The Nazarene had won his last eleventh hour prisoner.
If you are in the dark and want to see the light again...
Just listen to the words I heard from this beloved refrain...
JUST AS I AM WITHOUT ONE PLEA,
BUT THAT THY BLOOD WAS SHED FOR ME!
