I had once again, acted before I really thought it through. I certainly hadn't prayed about it. “Mom, I'll be okay in a few days.”
“You've always been so head strong. What's it going to take to get you to think and pray about what you do? Well, it doesn't matter,” Mom said as she turned away from me. “You won't live that long.” She snorted disapprovingly as she walked into the kitchen.
“In trouble again.” I murmured to my dog Lad.
The day had started like most days, up in time to get to work, breakfast on the run. I hurried out the door. Walking to the car, I saw a neighbor kid's toy airplane on the garage roof. I liked the kid, so, on impulse, decided to get the plane down for him. I didn't want to take time to get the tall ladder out, it was behind some boxes. I reasoned that with the little step ladder I could get high enough to reach the Morning Glory trellis where it connected to the building and it would be strong enough to support me the rest of the way. Wrong, I got off the step ladder onto the trellis and took two steps up when crash, the trellis broke and I fell. I hit the step ladder with my shoulder on the way down to the ground. So, here I was. The emergency room doctor popped it back in place where the joint had separated, and told me to wear a sling for six weeks. The rest of the damage was just soft tissue bruising and would heal.
Now I had the rest of the day to think about what I should have done.
A sad story, all too common in this world.
A lot of Christians are like this. We don't want to pray about things and let God direct us. We don't spend any quiet time, just listening for God's voice. The Bible says to “Wait upon the Lord.” We think that's why the devil plays on our weakness of impatience. We want to do it now. We think we can accomplish it under our own power, but we can't. When we try, something nearly always makes things harder.
Words like caution, keep out, danger, do not enter, and other warning signs are like red flags to us and others like us. We can't wait to see why they are there. It's imperative that we test the sign, do the opposite of what it says. Sound familiar?
“We're only young, not yet out of college.” We hide behind our youth when explaining to people how we got hurt, when they say “When are you going to grow up?”
We can't keep using that as an excuse. We need to bridle our impulsiveness. The only way to do it is to depend on the Lord! To stop and think, “What would God do?” Pray this prayer for help.
“Dear God, please put a big stop sign in my mind when needed, followed by counsel from you. I'm tired of being hurt every time I do stuff without you. Please, with You helping me, I 'll stop taking unneeded risks. Amen.”
