I used to think a pastor was a preacher. Please, allow me to enlighten you. Preaching is only one of his many dimensions.
He is sometimes cook, house cleaner, care-provider, counseler, message-boy, referee, Sunday School teacher, accountant, and treasurer.
He has many obligations. However, his utmost goal is to please God and try to gently nudge Christians and non-believers to follow the way of the Master. I have only skimmed the surface of the multi-faceted life of a Pastor.
In my own heart, the Pastor is my earthly shepherd. He has been appointed by God, and should always be treated with respect and consideration. He is not the old boy down the street. Neither is he my idol. He has filled a place that God called him for, and his burden is heavier than we care to think about.
If the church doesn’t have funds, the Pastor brings the message anyway. Sometimes for several years. He may have to work at a regular job, and Pastor on the sidelines. But he steps up to the plate every week like he has no cares in the world. All his personal problems and issues are shoved aside as he allows God to speak and work through him, bringing the message of salvation and hope to a lost and dying world.
He may have a stomach-ache. He may have a headache. You will never know. God gives him the grace to bear whatever comes as the message is broadcast week after week.
His house may be in ill repair, and his rising cost of medical needs and insurances are never enough to cover his needs. He never complains. He just knows he has to finish the race and fight the good fight, for all concerned. He wants to hear the Master say “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
Things are not always as they seem. Many obstacles must be hurdled over. Many times he feels he is a failure.
But my Pastor is never a failure to me. If things are alright with Jesus, things are alright with me as well. I cannot really see his faults, because of the beam in my own eye. One day, when the beam is removed, I may be able to see the speck of sawdust in my Pastor’s eye. But until then, I will keep on praising God, and being reverent and respectful to my Pastor.
