One wire of my brain
Seems to know what is new,
Informs me I’ve been here
When I think I have not.
“Yes you have,” my brain argues
(He’s a bit of a snot.)
“When?” you might ask me;
The answer is…Never.
But all is familiar
Of this single endeavor.
At the quaint La Baguette,
I bought French homemade bread,
Watched the owner’s toupee
Shift askew on his head.
Should I tell him, I wondered;
That’s when life repeated
Or so my brain said;
Was a synapse deleted?
Listen to reason—
This shop opened last week;
I’ve NEVER been here,
Giving toupee critiques.
The feeling, the feeling,
Like a wave rolling in,
Let my mind suggest time
Birthed identical twins.
The walls were still coral;
Diamond tiles dressed the floor,
Just as I remembered;
All repeats as before.
A wave of croissants warmed,
A waft of Old Spice,
The sound of faint chimes,
And stirring crushed ice.
One thing I do know…
This doesn’t make sense.
Somehow my mind braided
The present—past tense.
My brain might be stubborn
With its odd recollection,
But I’m left with a comfort
And some introspection.
I wonder if heaven
Shares this same point of view;
At the foot of my Saviour,
Will I feel déjà vu?
