rolling down the road, winding through the hills,
leaving behind a life turned bad,
heading for a life not yet known.
miles behind me, yet more miles to go,
making good time at the posted speed of forty-five,
following the map down a black line road,
turning south at the sign marking route forty-one, heading south.
miles behind me, yet more miles to go,
passing through country i’ve never met before,
taking in the scenery, daisy-filled meadows and pine tree forests,
reading the billboards, ”Red Man Tobacco” and “Jesus Saves”.
miles behind me, yet more miles to go,
slowing down for a tractor hauling harvest hay,
going by a farm with a barn painted with the words, "Buy Calumet Powder",
humming the tune to a hymn i once knew, wish i knew the words, but seldom i do.
miles behind me, yet more miles to go,
getting close to where i need to be,
watching for the old white sign that says, “5 miles Harmony”,
wishing i was there, wishing i was home,
wishing i had no more miles to go.
