thank you for that message
You left on my cell phone
that day
I wanted to write it down
and have it bronzed
like those friendly baby shoes
that we keep on the mantel
I wanted to have it interpreted
into an abstract painting
to hang on my wall always
Before family and strangers
I wanted it read at my funeral
and on my birthday
every year
I was so proud in that moment
ear pressed to the smooth plastic
only one hand on the wheel
I nearly went off the road-
to bury myself forever
in the ugly sticky flower bushes
and short wall of concrete and riveted steel
that divides the highway
but I would have died happy.
Your message-
I wanted to take it to Everest
and set it down solid-
next to the mountain
for a brief comparison in IMPACT
When I heard it
I felt strong
stronger than
than the iron walls
of the Titanic
who in-spite of all her rusticles
is still there
it would have been inside the cover
of my first book and my last-
but I pressed 7 instead of 9
and so your message left me
it went into that cosmic no place-
the vast wireless graveyard in the sky
where loved ones’ wishes
secret spy rendezvous
important work schedules
breakups filled with horrific accusations
missed calls
and wrong numbers never answered
all gather and greet each other like ghosts
passing solemnly through
the age of technology’s dead-letter office
in cloudy and light blue heavens
I didn't mean to do it
This is just to say
I got your message after all.
