The black expanse that has wrapped the globe in darkness begins to shift. At first, the change is virtually impossible to notice. But soon the eyes must squint. Stars are not as easily seen. Something is happening. The deep hue is fading.
Shadows, lost in the darkness, now begin to reemerge. They slink along the trees’ outer shells and slither through dew-clad blades, stretching themselves out like tentacles in search of prey. Or perhaps they fear their fleeting existence.
The metamorphosis persists. Blackness has lost its visual effect, becoming a murky grey. It’s hard to see the surroundings - all objects blur into a single, indistinguishable color. The shadows continue to writhe. The birds begin their calls. They know what is coming.
A ribbon of gold glides across the vast sea of nothingness to seep into the crevices of each passing cloud. Wispy journeymen, traversing the endless region, now clothed in royal graffiti to be gazed upon in awe. Were it not for them, the transition would fall short of splendor. It is a sign of what is to follow.
The gold absorbs a reddish tint, creating a sudden burst of tangerine and magenta which spiders across the horizon, penetrating any surface it can find. Delicate strands of lilac join the display - a calming effect in this fiery spectacle. The conversion is far from over.
Creatures of the night scurry for shelter. Lingering shadows grasp at any lasting life. Winged beings now chatter and sing their praise to the Great Artist. The majesty oft ignored by so-called more intelligent species is recognized by these lowly forms.
As the colors reach the pinnacle of vibrance, the great yellow dwarf finally makes its grand entrance. Shrouded in brilliance, it rises - slowly - ensuring all may see. An enlivened breeze flits among the trees, rousing them from slumber so they may absorb the dawning warmth. It carries with it enticing scents of natural perfume. The waking wildflowers spread their petals in a show of unfettered excitement. This star is their life.
The air, once crisp, now begins to warm. Fog, asleep on the earth, dissipates without a sound. Dampness, touched by heat, cannot withstand. This mutation is unstoppable.
Soon no trace of darkness remains. The light has fulfilled its duties. The glorious presentation has faded into a gradient of blue, which will last until the end of day. Shadows will again make their presence known, and darkness once more will reign. But not before the parade of colors obliges the quiet calls of nature. Encore! Encore!
And in one final gesture, the setting star will set ablaze the sky. A reminder that though the darkness comes, soon too does the morning once more.
