Was a rocky, icy sphere,
When it was declared a planet
And by coincidence, that year,
Three billion miles apart there were
Two blest events – two births—
One child was born on Pluto
And the other, born on Earth.
The Pluto family, overjoyed
Upon their baby's birth,
And for Pluto's planet upgrade
Bestowed by folks on earth.
The infant had large bulgy eyes,
His parents named him Clyde.
A baby AND a planet –
Folks on Pluto beamed with pride.
The planet Pluto rotates once
In six of our earth days.
And Pluto waits four hours for light,
From filtered solar rays.
The amount of time the planet takes
To circumnavigate
Around the sun, in earth years, is
Two hundred forty-eight.
While earth revolved around the sun
The earth-child flourished—grew.
He mastered skills and gained new friends,
His age in years accrued.
He learned to swim by ten years old,
On water sports, he thrived—
He snorkeled every chance he got—
Devoutly practiced dives.
Clyde also had a hobby,
Where he gazed with bulgy eye
Into a high-powered telescope
Aimed past the Pluto sky.
This thing that fascinated most
Was what transpired on earth
Where cake and candles indicate
The years past since a birth.
Clyde's telescope, quite frequently,
Was fixed upon earth's child,
The water-sports— they mesmerized,
And snorkeling— beguiled.
Clyde's failed attempt to emulate
The diving on his planet,
For Pluto's crust was ice and rock—
His planet – hard as granite.
Then Clyde received some shocking news
When he was middle-aged
The planet Pluto – down-graded
Its citizens – outraged.
The Pluto folk assembled and
Had rallies on the craters
They carried signs in protest while
They marched 'round the equator.
And as it happens, all life-forms
One day must breathe their last.
The same held true for Pluto's Clyde,
His breath and life now past.
His counterpart on Earth enjoyed
Health with longevity.
He flourished for one hundred years—
Lived one full century.
In looks they were quite different
As Clyde was bulgy eyed,
Their life spans were identical—
At birth and when they died.
But Clyde lived not a hundred years,
In Pluto's years –point four,
That's why his fascination with
Earth birthday cakes and more.
On earth, your age advances as
The earth orbits the sun,
But Clyde, on planet Pluto—
The orbits totaled— none.
Clyde never had a birthday cake
Or candle with a flame,
He never reached the age of one—
His birthday never came.
