if our lives were but a day?
would we live it some other way?
a mere day,
twenty-four hours,
one sunrise, one sunset,
one journey of the moon across the sky,
what if this were our soul’s supply?
would we choose a winter’s day, a Christmas Day,
a day of cloistered warmth in flannel shirts and cozied fire,
cuddling with loved ones and drinking hot spiced tea.
is this the day we would choose to be?
would we choose a summer’s day, a sunshine day,
a day of romping barefoot in barley hay,
swimming with good friends and shouting with glee,
is this the day we would choose to be?
maybe a day in the springtime fresh, a greening day,
a day of beginning newborn hopes and emerging dreams,
listening to wild geese returning home to be with thee.
is this the day we would choose to be?
or possibly, yes, quite possibly a day in autumn, an aging day,
a day of strolling through a softening gold with friends grown old,
leaning against the strength of a wise, oak tree.
is this the day we would choose to be?
twenty-four hours of soulful breath,
what would our lifetimes turn out to be?
