And trembled at the sight.
A thousand campfires pierced the gloom
And sparkled in the night.
The sight that some would view with awe
Struck fear into my heart
For every point of light cast forth
A flaming fiery dart.
The arrow labeled as Defeat
Came sizzling through the air.
And hot upon its trail came Doubt;
Then next, flew Dark Despair.
They hissed of death as they drew near,
Unerring in their course.
I waited for the searing strike,
Transfixed as if by force.
But then a voice fell on my ear,
“My child, take up your shield!
For faith can quench those flaming darts
Before your fate is sealed.”
I raised my shield and knew that God
Had set me free from fear.
Rejoicing in the strength He gave
I watched the darts draw near.
But when their searing points but touched
Faith’s luminescent face,
They fell extinguished to the ground –
Deflected by God’s grace.
Rejoicing in the victory
I raised my voice in praise.
“Oh Father, You are mighty;
Help me stand for all my days!”
I heard Him whisper, “Yes my child,
I’ll grant you strength to stand,
And also to defeat your foes
Who camp throughout the land.”
My foes! They loomed on every side
Their shadows towered high.
But now with confidence I stood
With God as my ally.
I raised my arm; my sword, the Word,
Flashed out with slicing force.
My enemies fell back from me
With flight their sole recourse.
The thousand who had pitched their tents
Against me for the fray,
Were vanquished in the Victor’s name
And fled in sore dismay.
I watched their fading forms in awe;
In Christ I stood secure.
For He had given confidence
Forever to endure.
