TITLE: A Town Called Life | Previous Challenge Entry

Stranger things have happened in the sleepy town called Life, but not to one of its oldest and dearest residents, Joyce. Joyce had long since given up on ever getting out of this two-light town and every day she would walk from one end of it to another in bitter misery. She sniffed in disdain at tourists with their Crest Whitestrips smiles plastered from ear to ear as they stood in front of the only sign marking the existence of the small town:
Life, you are here.
Thinking themselves received some sort of Divine revelation they moved on with renewed purpose - after all they had been apart of all that Life had to offer, had met Life face to face and was ready to move on with their life and leave Life behind.
Yet stranger things had happened or so Joyce thought until the one day when Mark drove into town. That was over a half a decade ago. So many years and yet fifty never did seem that long of time to two people who loved each other so much in Life. As they gathered around to celebrate with the other residents of Life, and a few tourists added in simply because they wanted to experience more of what Life had to offer, Joyce realized that for once her in her life, Life was perfect. She had a man she still adored, good friends, great neighbors and Life was good.
Today, was a different day though and Joyce stared at Life’s passing parade and realized how long two months felt, like an eternity. Life just seemed to drag on and on without any new revelation to cause Joyce to desire to be a part of it. Two months ago Mark had left Life for another Life.
“Darling, it won’t be long.” he whispered with a voice time shook and his words echoed sadly to her as unspent kisses and unfelt hugs, both signs that Life does go on whether we are ready for it or not.
She wiped at a stray tear that had fallen and hit her hand as she felt his body exhale and Life as she knew it ceased to exist.
Today was definitely a different day. Joyce watched one particular tourist and felt the corners of her mouth edge into a grin. What a beauty! Joyce’s eyes had caught sight of a little girl barely able to toddle around dancing in the sunlight of Life. The little girl’s infectious grin spread out across her face and she raised her hands to the sky and laughed with delicious wonder.
“Is that the Life you promised me?” Joyce asked, her heart begging for completion of the hugs and kisses she had missed at Mark’s passing.
As Joyce raised her hands up to the sunlight and moved in mimicking steps to the bouncy blue-eyed cherub near her, she was certain that she felt a strong hug and the warm kisses from a different Son. And through her tears, evidence that she had found a new Life, she heard the heartfelt words, “I am come that ye might have life, and Life more abundantly.”
