However, trouble began when the business began to make less profit. At home, their marriage was in trouble. Money problems and the growing children were increasingly hard to manage. In reaction, Jim went silent and moody at home. He withdrew into himself. Meanwhile, Jane managed things at home alone. She was the virtuous wife. Her motto was
'She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness' - [Proverbs 31:27 NIV].
She was glad to escape from Jim when she got the call from her disabled father, "Please come. Mama's broken her hip."
She took off, leaving the children, the household chaos, the daily chores with Jim and flew to Europe to be with her parents. She was an only child and they needed her. During the flight, she felt a tug on her heart. She missed the children already. She prayed that they would be fine.
Jim was angry about suddenly having all the load; getting the boys to school and church on time, keeping his failing business afloat, paying the bills, doing laundry and cleaning the house. He began to realise how much Jane did. It all came to a head one day. While cleaning their bedroom he found an old box full of photographs that they had taken during their courtship days. He sat on the floor and began to reflect.
Ephesians 5:28 ESV came to his mind;
'In the same way, husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself'.
He began to miss her more and more daily and regret the lost years. Divorce was never an option for them.
"So what now," he asked himself.
Meanwhile, Jane had been skyping the children daily. She often reminded them of a favourite verse which came from Ephesians 5:2 NLT
'Imitate God, therefore, in everything you do, because you are his dear children.'
It was great when the daily calls began to include Jim more and more. Praying together began to happen. One day when the children were at a playdate with friends Jim and Jane had a long intimate phone chat.
"I am sorry that I have not been a good husband. Can we get counselling when you come home?" he asked.
"Yes! Oh yes!" she responded with passion. "I so want our family back again."
"I miss you so much," he added.
She went silent because she was weeping. "I love you Jimmy" she whispered.
" I am praying and believing for full restoration of our marriage and I want to redo our vows" she added.
Two days later Jim and the boys returned home from work and school to the smell of a home-cooked meal. The boys knew immediately. They ran for the door yelling unanimously "Mama! Mama's home!"
With a wide smile, joy in his heart and a quickened pace, Jim launched himself into the kitchen and lifted his beautiful wife off the floor. "Welcome home. We are together again."
