that girl sitting on the hill
amid lush springtime greens and
shamrock flourishing
claiming its heritage
In pensive mode she gazes
over choppy waters to a distant shoreline
connecting with ancestors
long gone
that green eyed Irish lassie
seeking deep things
elusive
mysterious
The breeze wafts soft tresses of black silk
to hide pale cheeks
flawless
as porcelain
oblivious to whisperings borne
imperceptibly on the breeze
‘Turn Irish lassie, turn
from dead things that hide in the shadows
move on, go forward
and live’
she turned
and she left
and never glanced back
and the sirens were screaming
and her whole body shook
as it rumbled and rolled down the freeway that night
Another time, another place
she stands at the altar with veil of exquisite white lace
resplendent and radiant
glowing with love
as her fine young man makes his vows
Alas too soon came temptation
and lust
for a fairer young lassie
love, shallow, short lived
embodied despair
what remained was ugly and dark
disillusioned, detached
impassively she drifts through the nights
until
desolation
the blackest hour
by an open window
high above the streets
imperceptibly discerns the sounds of rustling leaves
tossed carelessly by the wind
and the whispers
once more
‘Move on Irish lassie
dark thoughts dwell in the shadows
move forward
towards the light’
she turned
and she left
and never glanced back
lights too bright
voices, hurried and urgent
playing with the senses
pain, temples throbbing, throbbing
confusion …
… release
A different time, a different place
beautiful people
gentle, kind hearted
her very own children
all grown
her man adoring
loving
deep devotion
always
for ever
the way it should be
God’s way
The nurse wheeled the old lady outside
spring sunshine kissed the flowers
to awaken to a new day
in the perfectly manicured gardens
of the out building with the sign
that pointed the way through to
‘CVA DAY CARE UNIT’
‘We’re having a stroll today Irish lassie
to the hill by the sea
where the shamrock grows
in clusters
and the trees and grass are as green as your eyes
that sparkle with sunshine’
And the old lady chortled a lopsided grin
as the words danced before her eyes
out of reach
and she thanked her Lord
from a heart spilling over
with wonderment
and awe
for calling her name
and keeping
and watching
and lighting the path
when the blackness suffocated all that she was
For being there
always
to listen and keep
in His love
His fragile child
who vowed to sing
His praises always
in every circumstance
when words, elusive
refused to formulate on the lips
A different language
communicative
eloquent
fluid
expressive
the language of the Spirit
of God
