We have observed Sunday School evolving into Children?s Church and often used as a substitution for their attendance in the adult church service. Many times Children?s Church is used as entertainment and follows regular Sunday School. I am sure that God has looked on the efforts of Christians with both joy and sorrow along with a sense of achievement. He is probably thrilled with the fact that someone cared enough to teach the children about Him and how they should be participating and responding in a worship service. However, there are times it is taken to the extreme and the separation of children and parents causes other consequences. Parents often fully relinquish the responsibility of teaching their own children to others. They use the excuses that they are not learned enough, or have enough time, or that they feel cheated and cannot concentrate on the preacher with their kids in the pew next to them. The training of a child really does need to begin at home and it is the parent?s responsibility to do that training. However, I understand that many parents don?t go to church themselves and sending their children and trusting us to teach and train them is what they choose. Speaking from the experience of being a Sunday School teacher, it is quite a rewarding but huge responsibility. A side perk of being a Sunday School teacher is that when you teach you are forced to study yourself.
Jesus has always been concerned with children even when the disciples did not understand what was going on.
Matthew 19:13-14 Then were there brought unto him little children, that he should put his hands on them, and pray: and the disciples rebuked them. (14) But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.
Sunday School has nurtured many children such as myself. The church was my babysitter. My Sunday School teacher, Nettie Black, was loving, kind, and inspiring. In addition she continually opened her own home on Saturdays for all of us to come and practice our songs and have cookies and milk. I still remember the songs I was taught under her guidance. If you are a teacher, God bless you. If you are a parent ? keep teaching your children yourself if possible, but if not Sunday School may be an option. If you are a child, remember that God loves you, too, and wants to be a part of your life.
I cannot end this article without reminding all of us that we should be as little children ourselves. The word Alittle@ means half-grown, or having a teachable, humble spirit. We still need to be in Jesus? Sunday School.
Matthew 18:3-4 And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. {4} Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
