The world was a stage
On which strolled the noble and good.
(With no one on walkers?)
No walkers--just rockers,
And most people did as they should.
Ah, grand was that time
(Though you hadn’t a dime?)
Well, no money, but that wasn’t much.
Our fam’ly together
Would weather foul weather;
The doctor bill payments and such.
And neighbors in plenty!
No less than twenty
Were ringing the old party line.
(Did anyone eavesdrop?)
You could have heard leaves drop!
But nobody cared—it was fine.
You know what was best?
(No, but tell me the rest!)
It was this: there was real learning done.
Mother taught me to pray
And to join in the fray
Till my own earthly journey was run.
I can look back with pride
Grateful feelings inside
For the blessings God gave me in love.
(I'm glad too.)
And for you,
Most especially you, every day I thank Heaven above.
