Aunt Debbie was raised in a Christian home and was very active in her church. She married at the young age of nineteen and raised two beautiful girls. Her husband was a school teacher and they had a life to be admired. Debbie had the voice of an angel and when she sang in church it was as if every ones restless soul retreated to heavenly places as they listened to her sing. She lived a live devoted to God.
After the girls were raised and left home to start lives of their own Debbie took a vacation trip to Italy. She told her husband that she needed some time alone and just needed a break. Little did he know that trip would be the beginning of the end of their twenty two year marriage.
When Aunt Debbie returned from Italy she left her husband, turned her back on God, and married Mike. This was our first family union at her new husbands house in Bozeman. The house was like a castle. Natural stone on the outside and three thousand square feet of custom design on the inside. There was a spiral staircase leading up to the master bedroom. Looking out the master bedroom was a view of their private lake which sat on twenty acres of slopping green grass with huge water fountains and ponderosa pines.
The reunion was a event to be remembered in more ways than one. Debbie had set up a wooden dancing floor out by the lake and she had hired a band to play music that night. She also hired a professional to come over that evening and set off fireworks. The whole neighborhood was sitting around in chairs just waiting for our fireworks to begin. For the first time in my life I felt like I was a part of the rich and famous as the band played and fireworks went off to the oohs and awes of the spectators. That night Debbie had invited all her new found friends who were also living the social high life to join our reunion.
I found myself standing next to Aunt Debbie and I said: “You seem to be really happy?”
Happy! I’ve never been happier in my entire life!” I just wish I hadn’t wasted so much of my life in the fairy tale beliefs of the church.”
“Debbie, you can’t really believe that?”
She glared at me with a satanic expression and hissed: “I believe it with all my heart!”
Just then another rocket exploded in the sky sending bursts of reds, blues, and yellow streaks of light dancing in the dark sky. With that she walked off to dance to the bands rendition of: “I Did It My Way.”
I stood alone listening to that famous Frank Sinatra song that evening and I felt sorry for Aunt Debbie. She was wallowing deeper and deeper in the mud pens of the world and it’s system of living. She was fast becoming what she believed. “Don’t we all become what we believe?” If we follow Christ and His teachings then He will define and guide our life. If we follow the world and it’s pleasures then the world will define our life.
Aunt Debbie drifted away from Christ and choose to believe Satan’s lie. “Surely you won’t die.” Every sin is the exchange of God’s truth for Satan’s lie. The door to two worlds remain open to Debbie. I hope and pray that she comes to a place in her life when she realizes that only Jesus can make all her dreams come true.
“A man reaps what he sows. The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction, the one who sows to please the Spirit will reap eternal life.” Galatians 6:8.
