It really had not been so long ago that he lived such a life. In fact, just last month the turning point from years of unbelief and criticism had come. That day he was driving on his normal route home from work. He had been too busy thinking about his upcoming project to notice the slippery patch of ice until it was too late. His foot slammed on the brake, but the car skidded into the side railing and began to flip down the steep incline. Not once or twice, but seven times! When the car came to a stop, the first thing he noticed was how conscious he was. Then the pain him like a ton of bricks. Jolts of it shot up and down his legs and arms.
All of a sudden, instead of everything going black, light began to stream into his wide-awake eyes. He started to shake his head to clear it, but quickly thought better of it when pain shot down his back. What he then saw he still had not determined whether it was flesh-and-blood real or just a figment of imagination. A man that looked just like him appeared standing next to a cross. He instantly knew that it was Jesus hanging on the cross. What came next, though, surprised him more than anything in his life. Out of his mouth came words he recognized…words of doubt in God…criticism of those who did believe…cynicism of a God in control…words he himself had spoken over the last ten years. The most shocking part was that every time he spoke Jesus was being crucified over and over again. After that he collapsed into shock from the pain, both physically and now spiritually.
When he came to in the hospital, his body was cast at the both legs and one arm. The doctor told him that his survival was a miracle, but he should heal quickly now. However, he knew that his broken spirit would take a take a lot more time to mend.
Now he here was, a month later, physically on the road to recovery, but emotionally scarred. He felt so unworthy. He knew that God had forgiven him, but he could not shake the vision of Christ’s blood stained body. He had caused Jesus to suffer when he had turned his back on God at age twenty and began to deny the Creator’s existence. Although he could use many excuses his reason brought him, he knew he lived that way to satisfy his own selfish will. If there was no God, then he could not be held accountable!
He cried out for mercy once more and he unexpectedly felt a warm hand on his shoulder. He turned to face the person but found no one there. A moment later he felt two warms hands but still there was no bodily presence. Then the strangest sensation of peace filled him as he felt himself being lifted by two very strong arms. As he was wrapped in a bear hug, he heard the words “Welcome home, my son. All is forgiven.”
