Each morning now the sun is sneaking up a minute or so earlier, and lingering a bit longer in the evening. Those who suffer from sunlight deprivation, “winter blues” brought on by the extended darkness of winter, are hailing each additional drop of Vitamin D they can get. For many, the issue isn’t as much clinical as it is impatience. As if we shout, “Get on with it!” to God, hoping to hurry Spring and warmth, and trading boots for sandals and hot chocolate for iced tea.

This year, God does not seem interested in hurrying. Frigid blasts follow heavy snowfalls, over and over. Even bright days oppress us when high temperatures barely reach zero degrees. The sun is turned on but its thermostat is broken!

The term “long, dark winter” resonates as we venture out in bundles and slink back inside with chattering teeth. Grateful for the heat, at least we can count our blessings for furnaces, resources that fuel them, and technology that keeps us connected… to web sites for tropical vacation planning. Ahhh - the warm glow of the computer monitor fills a tiny bit of the dark void. But will it ever end?

Jesus says, “I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.”

THAT is a light in which to bask. It’s always there; we need to take time to absorb it. As we study the morning horizon waiting for beams of brilliant orange, yellow and white to appear, so we should study God’s Word. It enlightens us to the true character and nature of God, as John 1: 1-5 explains:

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” (NIV)

Dear Jesus, help me use this time of darkness to read and absorb your Word. Let its meaning warm my Lenten journey with your light so that I may more wonderfully understand the glorious resurrection story that is coming at the end. Amen. PS: And please let Easter be warm enough for sandals.
