Candy is a favorite of mine, especially Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. Those chocolate covered morsels of sweet creamy peanut butter just melt in my mouth. M and M’s run a close second in my favorite candy itinerary. Donuts are my delight. With a crisp sugary coating, their featherweight cake makes my mouth water. A cup of coffee with a donut by its side makes a heavenly treat. I enjoy salty carbohydrate snacks as well as any other junk food. I love the crunchy sound of a crisp potato chip, and I love the feel of its salt melt on my tongue. I also enjoy the spicy coating of a Mexican seasoned chip. After eating those, a soda comes in mighty good.
But, my ultimate junk food treat is ice cream; cold, smooth, refreshing ice cream. I love the way the hard scoops drizzle in my parched mouth and invigorate me on a hot, muggy day. I especially love any kind of chocolate ice cream; it makes me feel alive. Nuts, chocolate chips, and chocolate fudge swirls enhance the enjoyment of delicious ice cream. And, plain old vanilla is just as delightful.
My love affair with ice cream began when I was just a young child. The ice cream man in his dapper white suit and his dapper white truck would ring his way into the neighborhood gathering the children like the Pied Piper of Hamlin. If I was lucky, my mother would empty her change purse and give me coins to purchase a popsicle or a fudgesicle. Mmm – it was like a Christmas present on a hot, sunny day. My mom often splurged on me in that manner, and I loved it.
When I was a teenager, there was a soda shop and dairy in our neighborhood. Bodkers was its name, and they had the best malts and hot fudge sundaes in town. I would ride my bike a mile to the parlor for my favorite treat, a hot fudge sundae. Wow! It tasted so good! The ice cream was pure cream, and the hot fudge was thick as caramel. It also was a special place for me because sometimes I would spot my precious daddy. He worked there as a wholesale milk dealer. After seeing him, my sundae tasted even better.
It was fortunate for me that my dad was in the milk business. Our family always had milk, half and half, butter, etc. But, ice cream was distributed in a different venue. The only way we could obtain it was to get it from the store – like everybody else.
It was fortunate for me that I married a man, who really loves making ice cream. On a hot summer’s day we didn’t mind the weather because we knew Dad (Jim) would make ice cream. He’d gather the cream, sugar, and flavoring, and he’d make a delicious sauce. After placing the sauce in the ice cream maker, he’d stir along the rim with rock salt and ice. Watching the maker spin was half the fun. In about thirty minutes we’d have our fresh frosty treat. It wasn’t like the store brand, but it was just as sweet and refreshing. The ice cream was fun, yet the family fellowship was the best.
I enjoy most of the foods God has provided (lima beans for one exception). Whenever I want a treat, I search the frozen food section of the refrigerator for my favorite – ice cream. Sometimes I overindulge, yet most of the time I try to eat healthy. Unfortunately, obesity is rising in this nation. Adults and children alike need to eat properly and consume less junk food. All need to eat fresh fruits and vegetables more often. Scripture is adamant that God cares for our bodies as well as our spirits.
I Cor.6:19 (KJV) What? Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?

Nice little note at the end about eating healthy.
