“Thank you for ministering to me. You allowed God to use you. You’ve given me more reason to trust Him,” Kate told me after the program. I felt good about my ministry and myself.
Music I believe is spirit. It has the tendency of penetrating into the spirit and soul of a person. That is why some people do all manner of things when their favorite music is being played and most of the time, you find them doing certain things they would have probably not done if they were their normal selves.
And you know what? Most of the time, such people seem not to recognize the very place they are or what they are doing and if even they did, they perhaps are not bothered.
Do you remember the story of David and Saul in the bible? Saul, whenever was tormented by the evil spirit had David come over with his harp and any time he played his instrument, the evil spirit left king Saul. (1Sam 16:14-23)
What about Paul and Silas in prison? They prayed and sang hymns to God and the prison doors split open. (Acts 16:16-38) That is the power of music.
The Cambridge Dictionary of English defines music as “a pattern of sounds made by musical instruments or singing or a combination of both, intended to give pleasure to people listening to it.”
This confirms the definition my lecturer gave one time in connection to music. He said, “Music is a combination of sounds that are pleasing to the ear.” This in effect means that not all sounds are pleasing to the ear and more so, what is described as music to one party may not be so to another. Like it is said, “one man’s meat is another man’s poison.”
In Africa and for that matter Ghana, where I come from, music is incorporated in most of our activities ranging from naming ceremonies, puberty rites, marriage ceremonies, death (dirges), recreational activities (play songs), religious activities as well as incidental ones (work songs). This goes a long in depicting that, the value of music is much appreciated here. We believe that music calms the body after a hard days work, gives pleasure, among others.
Music is in fact appreciated all over the world and not just Africa.
We would also realize that in the Old Testament when David was building the Temple of God, the structure included Singers who were also assigned special duties. This reveals the vital role music plays in worship and how important musicians are to the church. (1Chron 25)
I believe whatsoever you take in as an individual is what you will produce and what you will become at the end of the day. If therefore music can make and unmake you, let us then be mindful of what we listen to.
It is possible to dislike a particular kind of music but not to hate music in totality for if even snakes appreciate music, how much you and I?
