My God, His way is holy-but mine is to my shame.
What I may call a “little fib”, my God would call a lie,
And other things I falsely name, they cause my God to sigh.
Just take it for example: this thing that we call lust,
My God, He has another name-for He is always just.
This thing that we might pardon does our God defame,
For He calls adultery by its rightful name.
Hatred is with murder, upon an equal plane,
And yet we might excuse it beneath a different name.
But if the weight of all these sins we rightly understood,
We would not be so quick to say how our lives are good.
And now my God, He says to me, “Shall we not agree?”
“For I know what you do not; I see what you don’t see.”
And so, in sorrow, I should cry and bow my head and say,
“My God, you know much more than I-this is your holy way.”
“I must call it what You call it; yes, Lord, I agree:
There cannot be this difference between my God and me.”
So now let us acknowledge all our foolish pride,
And then our God will start to cleanse every sin inside.
Let us say then, with our Lord, each sin is what it is,
And let us never truth deny, knowing we are His.
