Our sinless Savior,
The Reader in the synagogue
Upon the Sabbath day.
From the very beginning,
He was God, and still He is.
Look carefully at His hands,
Hands that will touch
So many people
In need of healing,
Will multiply loaves and fishes
To feed the hungry multitude,
Will hold the little children
In love and tenderness,
Will wash with deep humility
The feet of His disciples
And will offer to them bread and wine
As symbols of His body and blood.
Those hands resurrected
Will prepare and serve a meal
Along the shore of the sea
For His beloved disciples.
Watch now as with
Those selfsame hands,
As yet unmarred
By cruel punishing nails,
He unrolls the scroll of Isaiah,
And He begins to read.
Listen to His voice:
Voice that will preach and teach
Of salvation for all mankind,
And of the way for man to walk
Pleasing to almighty God;
Voice that will calm the storms,
Will comfort and guide,
And even call forth the dead;
Voice that will make promise
Of an eternity
In heaven with Him
And will cry, “It is finished,”
To make that eternity possible.
Hear His words as he reads to all
Who are gathered there:
The Spirit of the Lord is on me,
because he has anointed me
to preach good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim
freedom for the prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind,
to release the oppressed,
to proclaim the year of the
Lord’s favor.*
Let your heart be thrilled
When you hear Him declare
That this Scripture is fulfilled
In their hearing.
Hold in your heart the truth
That the words the Reader Messiah read
In a time so long ago
Are meant for you still today.
* Luke 4:18-19 (NIV)
