Those Manzanilla olives are my favorite food.
The pungent green orbs chase away exhaustion and angst—
They alone have the power to sate and alter my mood.
My stomach revolts daily with churning acid,
Relief is but a glass jar away;
My salvation is submerged in an amber liqueur.
The pimento stuffed savior holds nausea at bay.
Ahh…Spanish olives with an orange juice chaser…
“OJ and olives?” you may ask with dismay.
Hey, last time it was celery and sauerkraut!
Don’t knock it unless you bow at the porcelain throne each day.
They’re briny, toothsome and full of umami;
The perfect salty-sour bite.
The foreseeable downside could possibly be
The size of my ankles swelling to soaring new heights.
My eyes rolling in pleasure, I dig in my spoon.
The cross on the stub end is my ‘X’ marks the spot
Pause mid-bite to beseech my poor husband,
“Seriously, is this all we’ve got?”
A companion for pizza (Mmmm….pizza),
A snack on the fly—
You can keep your ice cream and pickles,
Just remember, the green olives are MINE!
