Rich courtiers, shivering,
Nervously assembled
In the palace of the King.
The tension and the trembling
Upon the faces shown
Came not just from the temperature
Of wintertime alone.
For secretary and officials
With strong purpose firm and grim
Had brought the very Word of God
To King Jehoiakim.
And in the winter palace,
Where the icy blizzards stole,
All gazed upon God’s judgment
Written on a scroll.
For God had given His prophet
His message, word by word,
And aching Jeremiah
Had dictated all he heard.
The call for full repentance
Before more time elapsed.
Was proffered in great mercy
And prefixed with Love’s ‘Perhaps’.
The king, whose heart was arctic hard
And cold as winter’s night,
Would not allow a small regard
For God’s pure Word of Light.
So as the scroll was opened
And he heard the words of life,
With glacier coldness he reached forth
And took a sharpened knife.
The brazier fire burned brightly
The knife blade shone like gold,
Then the king, with cold defiance,
Cut up the holy scroll.
He chopped God’s Word in pieces,
And with expression grim
He burned the imperishable Word -
Foolish Jehoiakim.
Can any conflagration
Destroy the truth you’ve heard?
No - naught in God’s creation
Can thwart th’eternal Word.
T’was winter in the palace
And in the souls laid bare.
Without the saving Word of God
T’is winter everywhere.
