Synopsis: Sometimes as Christians, we fix our eyes on the temporary while forgetting the eternal. This sketch is a lighthearted look at that all too human trait.
Cast: One male- Russ One female- Cindy
Camping attire
Props: Free standing pup tent, two lawn chairs, two small logs for campfire, rose bush and bag of marshmallows
Setting: General Stage
Scripture: II Cor. 5:1 NIV
Russ: [sitting in lawn chair looking as if contemplating a problem]
Cindy: [enters from behind the tent] This place is great! I love getting up in the cool morning, just after the sun comes up and going for a nice, invigorating hike. You really should have joined me. The view from the peak is outstanding! [A beat] Did we run out of ice?
Russ: [still somewhat distracted] No, we still have plenty of ice.
Cindy: Didn’t I see you drive out of the park awhile ago?
Russ: Yeah, I went into to town to buy some rose bushes.
Cindy: Rose bushes?
Russ: Well Yeah, I know how much you like roses. So, I thought that this place could use a couple of bushes. I’m just trying to figure out where to plant them.
Cindy: You’re going to plant rose bushes?
Russ: I was thinking about over near that rock.
Cindy: Russ, this is a campground. I’m not sure that they are going to like you planting rose bushes.
Russ: [standing] Are you kidding? Look at this place. You would think that they would have put out a few flowers. They’ve barely landscaped at all.
Cindy: I could be wrong but I think that they are shooting for the rustic charm look.
Russ: That’s why I went with roses. They seem to fit in with the whole rustic thing.
Cindy: Well….still this is just a campsite. It’s not like we’re going to be here after this week.
Russ: I wanted to talk to you about that. You know this place is only about an hour from work and you did say that you really like it here right?
Cindy: Yes… [Skeptically]
Russ: Well, why couldn't we just stay? [Looks as if she should think he’s brilliant for having thought of it]
Cindy: [as if he’s lost his mind] Because, it’s a campground.
Russ: Well, I know we just have the tent right now. But, I was thinking about building a little cabin, maybe, over by that stand of trees. What do you think?
Cindy: I think that maybe the air is a little too thin and the blood isn’t circulating to your head. Russ, you can’t just build a cabin.
Russ: Why not? We are renting this place. A tent’s not going to be too comfortable once winter hits.
Cindy: That’s it! This is ridiculous! Next thing that I know, you’ll be calling the cable company, putting in a mailbox and planting those mini sunflowers all around it!
Russ: Your right! I forgot to get a mailbox! [Slaps his head as if to say what was I thinking and exits]
Cindy: [looking exasperated and shaking her head] [calls after him] Russ! Where are you going? You can’t put in a mailbox. I’m not even sure if they deliver out here. This isn’t our home. It’s just a campsite. [Sits down in the chair confused, resigned]This isn’t our home. [Picks up a marshmallow and pops one in her mouth] [Lights out] [Waits a beat and then exits]
