One Star to Be Them All
******************************************************
Characters:
Professor Johan: A believer
Dr. Miles: An atheist and scientist
Setting:
Sitting aboard a time machine, looking out upon the earth’s Solar System. Dr. Miles frustrated, confused, and busy bodied. Professor Johan is content, smiling, reassured, and finding the situation ironical for the hundredth time.

Johan
How long do you plan to continue this charade?
For a decade now your best plans have laid
Us back here, time and times, all the same
I fear, Dr. Miles, it puts science to shame
Miles
For as long as it takes
Science never is shamed
Each theory that breaks
A new hypothesis claimed
Johan:
The results, dear friend, the results, you miss
Isn’t ‘bout science, but sanity, to be seen through all this
Same results, a decade long trial
Nothing to be done, no solution from a vile
Can answer you this, this repeat of time
The answer is simple and not hard to find
Miles
Be gone with you then, if science you’ve left
Johan
Come with me then, Miles, you need to rest
Look out there yonder, the great Milky Way
Nine planets, one solar system, regardless of days
Had to reclaim Pluto, but alas, it’s still nine
And that star thought to be dying is doin’ just fine
We’ve gone past and future in your super machine
Ten years of hopes for new things to be seen
All dashed, all dashed, and you refuse to believe
That the only beings God made are men: you and me
One star in the day that governs it all
One star did it all since the day of the fall
You thought it was millions, we ventured to bend
Time’s hard and straight line, and to science defend
But ‘twas science that broke when we done bent the line
If science still works, it’s in my camp, not thine
Miles
‘Tis not poss’ble at all
This all makes no sense
One star since the fall…
Maybe one of the vents
Yes, but, I’ve got it
A vent must be off
Sit, professor, sit
To fix it, I’m off
Johan
Quite off, no rocker left to hold you, dear Doc
Rest, rest, my friend, listen for the knock
Miles
No time for this now
There’s a problem – must be
Johan
Rest, rest, listen for the knock; rest here with me
Miles
Eyes closed; just like a believer
I’ll not believe this one star theory
From the mouth of a deceiver
Johan:
Miles, this decade has us exhausted and weary
‘Tis all one star, nine planets, and humans
No other creatures, no other places to ruin
Miles
That’s too great a waste
Johan
You can’t bear its weight
Miles
It’s so great a waste of that beautiful space
Johan
A love so great that it expends so much waste
To court you, its beloved
Rest; feel kissed and hugged
Miles
Such language, such transgression
I’ll not give you my confession
Johan
Oh, Miles, you just did.
(a door creaks open)

...gave me shivers! Awesome!
