The movers bustled in and out, efficiently carrying and placing the remnants of her life into the small available spaces. She had never looked forward to downsizing, especially not this much. But she would look on the bright side.
She had asked for this apartment, even though it was smaller, because of the pine tree. She had remembered how Logan always loved the music of the wind singing in the pines when they lived in the mountains. Even now, the wind whistled through the pine needles like a thousand tiny violins. The tree swayed, bowing a stately welcome.
A chickadee landed on one of the closest branches. He cocked his head side to side as if to show his new black cap to its best advantage. “Chicka-dee-dee-dee!” he announced as though introducing himself as her neighbor. A smile played briefly across her face as a little shower of snow fell from a higher branch and startled him away. She would have to find a birdfeeder for the balcony.
“I think that’s it, Ma’am.”
“Oh, would you do one more thing for me?” She pulled a little wind chime out of its box. “Could you hang this for me before you leave?... Right in front of the patio door will be fine, where it will play its music when the door is open.”
She thought he looked at her strangely. “Yes, I know it’s too cold now, but I’ll feel better with it up, if you don’t mind.”
She turned her chair to face the window and the tree, and sat deep in thought after they left. The snow was still deep and the chill was still in her heart. Even her cup of tea could not warm her now.
But someday… after time, the tree would burst out with bundles of incredibly bright green new needles to announce the arrival of spring. The sunshine would warm the chill; the crocuses by the front door of the building would break through the snow. The birds would come to the feeder and chirp and squabble. And the door would be open to let the wind chimes sing.
And surrounded by the music Logan had loved, she would learn to heal. She would cling to love and memories evergreen… but somehow, she would learn to go on alone.
