What comes to mind when you hear the word masterpiece? Most people think of a work of art: a painting, a movie, a picture or a song. The Mona Lisa is said to be the most famous painting of all time. But what about The Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh or the Old Guitar Player by Picasso? The statue of David or the Sistine Chapel may come to mind. If you prefer movies, perhaps Forrest Gump, the Wizard of Oz or Gone with the Wind are masterpieces to you. These are all great pieces of art and there are millions of others.
Maybe you see the world itself as a masterpiece. The perfect pink rose, the towering elm or a valley of sunflowers provides a peaceful, masterpiece in the mind. An eagle soaring high above a mountain, a fish swimming free in a river, or a litter or lion cubs paints a picture of freedom, which in itself could be a masterpiece.
There are very few masterpieces in life. Many things are beautiful, but it seems like it takes something extra special to be hailed a masterpiece. We all have the ability to create the next great work of art. The next great American novel could be in progress right now. The next million dollar painting may be just one brush stroke away.
The king of the masterpiece is God. All of the animals, trees, lakes and oceans are part of His masterpiece. No one can come close to recreating anything that God has. Even the things we may not like: snakes, bugs, rodents and spiders are masterpieces created by God. What some people find ugly or unnecessary, others find beautiful and couldn’t imagine life without it.
God also created you. He created you in His image and there is nothing that can be improved about that. He didn’t use brushes, oils, cameras or scripts; He used Himself. No painting, movie, picture or song can be compared to God’s greatest work. We are all made different, but we are all made perfect to Him. So the next time you look at a painting or picture, watch a movie, read a book or listen to music and think it’s a masterpiece, remember; God made the best masterpiece of all, you!
