The book of Nehemiah is a wonderful parable to my own life. I too have to build an inner temple which is like a fort.
At times it feels defences are broken, I can't continue on some fronts, and progress is slow. Achieving those goals seems a long way off.
Still, I pray and God gives me the strength, ability, and all the materials to fully build my inner Jerusalem.
Like Nehemiah, Satan tries discouraging me. People tried putting Nehemiah off rebuilding Jerusalem's wall but he never gave up. He gave the matter to God in prayer. At some point Nehemiah had guards posted day and night to meet potential threats. Perhaps similarly God places a guard around me when threats are too much.
Nehemiah had a vision and kept going till it was completed. Bit by bit walls were strengthened making it harder for his adversaries to reach him to discourage him. As the walls grew firmer and stronger his opponents grew weaker and more despondent when they saw Nehemiah succeeding. Finally he finished what he started, much to the delight of his friends and dismay of his enemies.
Nehemiah followed God closely. He stood up for the truth, and was not afraid to speak up as God's spokesman. No one could really answer him when he spoke.
