Waiting in the nest
With wide open mouth,
Cheeping for mother
To return with food.
Hunger is the football team,
Ahead of a big game,
Working hard at practice
And hoping for a win
Against their fiercest foe.
Hunger is the lion,
Skulking through the depths
Of the dark forest,
Stalking for prey
To rend and devour.
Hunger is the mother,
Eager for her son
To return from war,
While praying for his safety
Amid terrors and danger.
Hunger is the lonely person,
Craving human touch
And the companionship
Of a friend
To understand and care.
Hunger is the multitude
Of needy around the world
With an ache in their bellies
And an immense need
For nourishment.
Hunger is the avid seeker
Of wealth and possessions,
Or fame and recognition,
Or honor and admiration,
Or power and control.
Hunger is the human heart,
Yearning for the Creator,
Lord God Almighty,
To fill the emptiness there
With His loving presence.
