As you snuggle ever closer
To my heart, I hold in my hands
Your tiny foot and caress
Your precious little toes.
I counted them quite carefully,
Along with your wee fingers,
The very first time you were placed
In the circle of my arms.
So sweet and pure, your dimpled feet,
With the innocence
Of a so-far sinless life.

These much loved baby feet,
Still and quiet while you sleep,
Will kick when you awaken
And you cry out with gusto
For fulfillment of your needs.
In hardly any time at all,
You will stand gingerly
And take your halting first steps.
So many places your feet
Will early carry you,
Like playing in the park,
To Grandma’s house and church,
And way too soon, to school.

I pray your feet will never go
With companions who would lead
On shadowed paths of evil,
But instead, through all your life,
Your footsteps will be guided
By God’s Holy Word
To a life of loving service,
Where your family
Can safely follow in your steps.
Then finally will come a time
When your days here are done,
And you will walk
On shining streets of gold.
