TITLE: Walk a Day in My Shoes | Previous Challenge Entry

why I don’t live the life I planned.
After a day in my shoes,
I think you’ll see that I don’t choose
to live my life this way.
Notice how tight they feel,
the confinement is real.
It feels so suffocating
and oh, so deprecating.
You wish you could break out of them.
That’s how it is with me.
I wish that you could see
how stuck I am inside,
how much I’ve been denied,
in a body which lacks energy.
The day has just begun,
you want to have some fun,
but you’re isolated,
getting out is complicated.
Your shoes won’t let you loose.
If you only knew,
I’d like to get out, too.
My illness keeps me home.
I spend the days alone.
My body keeps me bound.
Can you feel the pain
as you try to strain
to wiggle, stretch, or move
in a shoe you want removed?
But there is no way out.
The aching keeps me trapped,
my body is attacked.
So many things I miss,
and there are days I wish
I could crawl out of my skin.
Once my shoes are off your feet,
you can live a life complete.
You get to choose what you do next
and be free of ill effects.
A choice that I don’t have.
I hope it’s clear to see
the blame is not on me.
I am not faking it,
I am barely making it.
So please don’t judge.
I know it’s hard to understand
why I’ve not lived the life I planned.
After a day in my shoes,
I hope you’ve seen that I don’t choose
to live my life this way.
Author’s Note: I sometimes feel judged. If people could walk a day in my shoes and feel how constrained, suffocating, isolating, and painful it is to live with this chronic illness, perhaps they would see me differently.
