A place of peace;
Lived crafty and deceitful Sisyphus -
Ruler of Corinth and its isthmus.
His cunning manipulation
Brought shame on his nation,
But he was so clever
That no-one could ever
Catch him off-guard;
Though they tried ever so hard.
Sisyphus' behaviour was at odds
With all the Greek gods.
They finally sent the Underworld’s ruler, Hades
To capture this character who’d made his
Reputation so soiled, so stark -
Even into Hades’ Underworld of the dark!
Hades arrived with pomp and splendour;
Confident of soon seeing the end ’o
Sisyphus’ tricks.
But this king had a cunning counter-fix.
As a master of deceit,
He knew how to fall on everyone else’s feet!
Poor Hades could never believe
What Sisyphus had up his sleeve
Literally!
For when he saw Hades’ new-fangled handcuffs,
His persuasive skills were enoughs
To insists
That Hades try them on own wrists!
Poor Hades was thus himself cuffed -
With all his efforts rebuffed.
Yet worse was to come,
For he had to succumb
To imprisonment -
While Sisyphus freely came and went;
Exercising his evil intent
On any unsuspecting victim –
Whether at random or he’d especially picked ’em.
Unimpressed with this fate,
The other gods were not late
In bringing Hades' relief -
Much to Sisyphus’ grief!
Justice for him was a bitter pill;
For up a steep hill
He had to roll a massive stone
All alone.
Only to have it roll back down
To the level ground.
Again and again -
A constant pain
And a tremendous feat.
Yet forever on repeat.
The morale of this story?
There’s no lasting glory
For cheating or manipulation.
There’s only frustration
And grief
With no relief!!!!
