I knew the moment she didn’t kiss me that it was going to be that kind of day
.
It wasn’t for lack of trying. Sometimes cultural understanding makes you different as night from day. How was I supposed to know?
The taxi dropped me off at a dingy old hotel downtown. It looked much nicer on the internet when I booked it. Before I even got inside I saw a grungy young man with dreadlocks feeding a coat hanger through the stripping in a silver Mazda sedan. A blond woman was crying helplessly on the other side of the car. I knew distress when I saw it. So, I abandoned my suitcase, walked right up and knocked that guy out cold with a single punch.
Turns out the grungy guy in dreads was an undercover police officer trying to help a mom open up her car after she accidently locked her keys and her baby inside. That didn’t go too well. Turns out, while the officer recovered, another man quickly opened up the car and handed the baby to the woman. While she stepped aside to comfort her baby, through feeding, the hero took the car for a test drive.
I was about to go into the hotel with my suitcase when I heard her screech again. She was looking right at me. “You let him steal my car. Call the police.”
I was about to alert the groggy undercover guy that a crime had been committed, but he looked like he wanted to lock me up. I glanced around and noticed a beefed up Harley with an electric start. I decided that I might still save the day. I jumped on board, started it up and sped off in pursuit of the real criminal. I appreciated the encouragement of the officer yelling behind me.
I maneuvered through the red light without a scratch on myself – which is more than I can say for the two cars which swerved to miss me and collided. I spotted the silver sedan a block ahead and sped between the rows of traffic to catch up. When I reached the getaway car I used my boot to kick in the tail light.
That got attention quickly. The car slammed on the brakes and was immediately rammed by the car behind it. I put my foot down and let the bike slide out from under me where it came to rest right in front of a bus which crushed it.
Within seconds I was at the driver’s door ready to deliver justice. The tinted windows kept me from seeing the surprise on the face of the thief. I yanked on the door, but it was locked. I began to kick the door and bang on the window. The driver who rammed the silver sedan from behind also began to bang on the car in a fit of road rage.
The passenger door opened and an elderly gentleman stepped out screaming. “Have you lost your mind? We’re doing a driver’s test. You’ve scared this girl to death.”
I looked again and noticed that the car was actually a silver grey Honda and not a Mazda. It’s easy to confuse all these new imports. I left the others to sort out the mess and tried to figure out how else I could save the day.
I took another taxi back to the hotel where everything started. My suitcase was still there. So was the woman with her baby. Several female officers were with her. I was still fifty feet away when she started pointing and yelling. “There he is. That’s the guy who assaulted the policeman trying to help me. He’s the guy who stole his bike.”
The women here are strong. They had me face down on the cement in no time with handcuffs on. When they got me to my feet I tried to explain.
“I just got off the plane from Sydney. I thought the guy was stealing her car. I was trying to be her knight in shining armor.”
I was saved by the women’s cell phone chirping and the officer’s radio call. It seems that some lunatic with a motorcycle had caused a major traffic accident for the woman’s sister who was taking her driving test. The description of the lunatic looked a lot like me.
The Gideon Bible in my cell resurrected my insights on a better way to save people. I never did get my suitcase back.

And it is so on topic, too, as your MC's perspective and reality truly are day and night from each other.
Great job!
Great job of entertaining us. It was a breath of fresh air. Sometimes I feel that we all are too serious sometimes. A little humor goes a long way.
God Bless.
Well done.
