To paint sky’s wide expanse
And waken sleepy Morning from
A lazy dreaming trance.
Day carries satchels filled with light
From rays of shining sun,
Then rests she in her gilded world,
Her gold designing done.
She is the overseer of clouds
That roll and toss and tumble,
Delivering great drops of rain
As thunders growl and rumble.
Reluctant is Day at the end.
She’s no desire to leave
And turn her powers over to
The master of the eve.
At twilight time Night tiptoes in
With gauzy colors streaming,
Ahead of darkness falling and
The rays of new moon’s gleaming.
The stars appear like twinkling buds
In Night’s immense bouquet.
How strange it is that they seem close
When they’re so far away.
As Day delivers radiance,
Night carries ebony.
Their difference is obvious
For all the world to see.
While Day gives time to work and play,
Then Night shares hours for rest.
The Lord created both of them
That mankind might be blessed.
