announcing the inevitable diaspora.
She stood erect, royalty enshrined,
seed heads at attention
in the light yawning its retreat across the garden.
What would it take?
The four-legged fluff ball
rolling among the mix of crabgrass and quivering stalks?
The red executioner
whirring angrily up and down until all decapitated life lay strewn in its wake?
Or a wobbly human child
ready to blow fairy kisses into the sunset?
The how,
the means,
it didn’t matter, as long as the legacy remained.
She’d waited for this day for so long,
and now she could smell it in the redolent air,
hear it in the swing of the sycamore leaves,
feel it in the bounce of the bulbous bees:
the beckoning,
the call to surrender.
She had been blessed
daily
by her Creator
with light exploding from the heavens,
fat drops released from weighted clouds,
nurture rising up through the soil into her roots.
He would do the same for her offspring.
So when it came,
the puff and surge and kick of wind,
she remained standing tall,
held fast
as each parachute lifted, dipped, ascended,
and sailed away.
And later
as the sky turned tendrilled shades
of chardonnay to sherry to port,
the lone stalk stood dizzy,
exultant,
content
in her sacred homestead.
Royalty enshrined.
