I understand this is a hard life, which makes it easy to feel anxious, depressed, or overwhelmed. I also understand there are no easy answers to questions about how to cope, manage your care, handle financial challenges, or a myriad of other concerns. However, I hope you can remember some key things to help you navigate your difficult situation. You are more than your disease. The real you still lives inside, filled with God-given traits, strengths, and gifts. Furthermore, remember these beatitudes for chronic illness:
Blessed are those who grieve their former lives,
for they will not take things for granted.
Blessed are those who listen to their bodies,
for they respect the vessels God has entrusted to them.
Blessed are those who need help,
for they provide opportunities for others to feel needed and to serve.
Blessed are those who maintain a grateful attitude,
for they will see the good around them even in the midst of their difficulties.
Blessed are those who are honest about their thoughts and feelings,
for their hearts are open to the Lord’s direction and inner healing.
Blessed are those who are isolated,
for they will be sensitive toward others who are lonely.
Blessed are those who find their identity in Christ,
for their illnesses will not define them.
Blessed are those who continue to use their gifts,
for God will work through them to bless and inspire others.
You’re human, and you’re allowed to struggle. Even so, please know that you’re never out of God’s sight, and you’re never beyond his reach. You can be real with the One who created you. He can love you right through the fear that’s hard to resist, the questions and confusion that can overcome you, and any despair you may feel. Be honest before him, and let him comfort you like only he can.
