It was at Omari’s thirtieth-surprising birthday party that we learned of his wisdom in bringing about reconciliation in what could have been an ugly confrontation.

Among the six invited guests was Fabian who took the floor. “I remember one evening at the bus park while waiting on our bus to journey home, Rohan who was with us saw a student from Jamaica College highlighting from his school bus, and in the spirit of champs' rivalry blurted:

“Look pan the fool!” We laughed. (his school was an underdog) The boy eyed us and went on his way.

About ten minutes later we were shocked to see the same boy accompanied by two big muscular men approaching us. We stood our ground in silence.

“A our nephew this, and we come fe kill you, a who you a call fool?’’ said one of the men.

Then one of the men pushed the schoolboy in front of us.
We backed away.

One of the men came up closer to us with a clenched fist. Immediately, we all stepped backward.

Can you imagine the tension? Then I heard:

“In the spirit of Champs rivalry sometimes we say foolish things. We are high school young men, I am from Kingston College, My friends are from Camperdown High, and your nephew is from Jamaica College. “Champs” is only for a season, so let us all unite and live.”

We all nodded, and as schoolboys, we shook each other's hands. Then two men and his nephew walked slowly away. Eyeing us as they were on their way. but we kept a straight face.
It seemed as if we were transfixed.

For a while, it seemed as if we were spellbound. Eventually, our bus came, and we were on the inside and our tongues were loose.

From that day, I saw something different about Omari. He saved our lives by his utterance.”

As parents, we were proud to hear that report because it could be different.

Solomon in his writings in Proverbs chapter fifteen verse one warned:


“A soft answer turns away wrath. But a harsh word stirs up anger” (New King James Version, Readers Text Edition)

This verse is one of the many adages used to diffuse situations of conflict and this always worked once applied. When you use this popular adage, you are using Godly wisdom, so let us be wise in our speech.

This is interesting and has a lot of potential. I did have a difficult time following it at times though. It might just be my tired brain, but it seemed you jumped from a surprise party to a bus ride. When retelling true stories, everything feels important to the author, but the reader may not need all the details or may not understand everything going on. I'd urge you to ask someone to read your entry aloud before you submit. If they stumble on words, you may need to do some more polishing. You've a great foundation, a nice take on the topic and a clear purpose for telling the story. Keep writing, don't get discouraged and I'd also encourage you to read and comment on every entry in your level and at least three in each of the other two. The more you read and leave feedback on others', you'll be surprised how much you discover about your own writing. Keep writing and reading!
