She told me that a well-acknowledged and musically accomplished family in the church where he goes lost their house to the bank and hadn’t any place to live. He had an empty, finished basement, so he took them in until they could find their own home. There is a mother, a father, and two teenage sons. They are not paying any rent, so my friend expected them to help her brother with the water and hydro bills. Her brother doesn’t want to say anything to them about his struggles to pay the bills. He has a wife and three small children. She worked part-time and the brother full-time, but now she also has a full-time job assisting him with the bills.
If I decided to bring a friend now who needs a place to stay, I would discuss my expectations from the beginning because, as it is said, "Burn child dreads Fire," And "Once Bitten, twice shy." I know coming to see and live with me are two different things.
A family member of mine, and we were very close friends for years. So, when I had gotten my first apartment many years ago, she came to live with me to assist with the rent. I was excited because we were good friends, and I felt that life would be easier for me financially and that we would have good times together. But it was the opposite. A few days after she moved in, her boyfriend joined her, coming and sleeping often. Her friends, too, often came in and out of my apartment. I didn’t expect that, so my life was miserable. I thank God the day that she left.
It seemed that my friend’s brother didn’t sit and talk with them about what he expected them to do; he took it for granted that they would at least contribute towards the bills, seeing that there were four of them doing laundry and using extra electricity. But they felt he could pay the bills as he appeared to be doing well career-wise.
They are still living in the basement. I hope they have worked things out and made it comfortable for each other. I know God will reward him for his generosity and kindness. And if there is another person he wants to help, he will remember the good old saying, "Don’t rush things, find out for yourself."
