1.It was used as a fortress as seen in Judges 9:50-52
“Then Abimelech went to Thebez and took it. But there was a strong tower in the city, and all the men and women-all the people of the city- fled there and shut themselves in; then they went up to the top of the tower and fought against it, and he drew near the door of the tower to burn it with fire.”
2.It was also used as storehouse 1 Chronicles 27:25
“And Azmaveth the son of Adiel was over the king’s treasuries; and Jehonathan the son of Uzziah was over the storehouses in the field, in cities, in the villages, and in the fortresses.”
3.It was also used to give warnings and signals 2 Kings 9: 17-20
“Now a watchman stood on the tower in Jezreel, and he saw the company of Jehu as he came, and said, “I see a company of men.” And Joram said” Get a horseman and send him to meet them, and let him say, “Is it peace?”
4.When Uzziah became King, he ensured that towers were built 2 Chronicles 26:9
“And Uzziah built towers in Jerusalem at the Corner Gate, at the Valley Gate, and at the corner buttress of the wall; then he fortified them. Also built towers in the desert. He dug many wells, for he had much livestock both in the lowlands and in the plains…”
5.Uzziah helped his army to prepare for war and had skillful men make devices to be used on the tower 2 Chronicles 26: 15
“And he made devices in Jerusalem, invented by skillful men, to be on the towers, on the corners, to shoot arrows and large stones. So, his fame spread far and wide, he was marvelously helped till he became strong.”
The uses of towers have become commonplace now as compared with days gone by. Nowadays towers have a greater role to play in our everyday lives as towers are used to strengthen prison structures, have military installations, and have telecommunication transmissions to name a few.
David in his writings referred to God as his Strong Tower because he was familiar with towers. As a warrior so he had a wealth of experience physically. He realized that spiritually he had to have reliance on the ultimate watchman (God) who is his protector, so he penned:
Psalm 61:3 “For you have been a shelter for me. A strong tower from the enemy.”
Solomon wrote in Proverbs 18:10 “The name of the Lord is a strong tower and the righteous run to it and are safe.”
As the son of King David, he too knew the power of a tower. He also knew that having the Lord as his strong tower in times of trouble will ensure his safety.
Personally, as Christians, we ought to be reliant on our father God to be our strong tower to shield and protect because we are always bombarded with problems wrought by the enemy.
Today you too can be safe with the Lord as your tower.
