In the Bible, the Tower of Babel was an effort of the people to fulfill their dream of reaching God and, ultimately, being like Him: a fearful thing, indeed! With unbridled egos, people would have worshiped themselves and required others to honor them. As the story goes, God would have nothing to do with that, so he confounded their language, thus assuring them that they could not complete the work.
It is curious to note that the locations of the highest towers in the world seem to tell us where the power seats are located. Before the twenty-first century, the tallest towers were in the United States. The Empire State Building, with only 102 floors, was the crowning achievement of the 1930s. The Sears Tower (1973 -2009), now the Willis Tower, in Chicago was also impressive, with its 110 stories. Unfortunately, we also remember the two towers of the World Trade Center that fell on 9.11.2001.
Looking at the ten tallest towers in the world, we learn that only one is currently in the US. It is the World Trade Center in New York City, number six on the list. In just the last ten years, there has been a power shift, as the locations of the world’s towers illustrate. Of the ten tallest buildings in the world, there are five in China, two in Saudi Arabia, one in Taiwan, one in North Korea, and one in the US.
Speaking of the coming days, Isaiah 30:25 (ESV) says:
“And on every lofty mountain and every high hill there will be brooks running with water, in the day of the great slaughter, when the towers fall.”
God will cause all of our towers to fall as He is the only One Who deserves the place of exaltation they represent. The Name of Jesus is above every other name, including those of people and buildings. He is our high tower.
Human pride will be abased when He creates the new heavens and the new earth filled with righteousness. Those who know Jesus will rule and reign with Him for 1000 years and then live with Him forever!
