It was a sunny morning at about nine o’clock. All the children were already off to school except me. Parents were off to work and those who were housewives were gone to the market to replenish their stocks in preparation for dinner later. I was all alone to do my washing, or so I thought. I prepared the water, the detergents and gathered the clothes.
I sat on a stump of the tree at the back of the yard, surveying the environment. The silence was deafening, but the light cool breeze, swept clean ground with its polka dot patterns made the atmosphere appealing. It was my first time in this setting alone so I enjoyed it.
Suddenly, creak, creak came from Newlyn’s room door. This disturbed and invaded my thoughts. I glanced towards the door and out came a barefooted stranger. He was shirtless and pantless. His tall muscular body moved as though he was on a mission. His only worn garment was white underpants which were below his waist to accommodate both palms holding his genitals.
Realizing he was advancing towards me, I leaped to the front of the yard, and into the family house. I locked every door and window and remained a prisoner until my parents came.
In retrospect, this bizarre incident authenticated my newfound faith in Jesus Christ. As a young Christian, the only person I could call upon was the Lord. But this was not audibly done at that time. I cannot honestly describe my emotions except that it was chilling but God in his mercies orchestrated my deliverance.
Today, I can repeat the Lord’s prayer with the meaning “…do not bring us to hard testing but keep us safe from the Evil One”. (Good News, Matthew 6:13) I also rejoice with the Psalmist “God is my shelter and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble” ( Good News Psalm46:1)
