Deep in her spirit, she heard the Lord's prompt reply. Much to her surprise, He said, "Martha, Martha."
"What?"
The Lord spoke again, "Martha, Martha."
Who was Martha, and what did she have to do with this question? Ellen felt she would crack if she had to hear yet another opinion. She couldn't handle someone else's viewpoint, at least not yet. He spoke to her heart for the third time, "Martha, Martha."
Ok, that does it. Three times means it must be significant. She remembered something about a woman named Martha in the Bible. She stopped walking and dug through her purse for her phone. She searched "Bible" and found many apps from which to choose. She picked one and searched "Martha." Sitting on a bench beside the walkway, she was amazed at what she read.
She found a story about sisters Mary and Martha with Jesus. He came to visit them because their brother had died. Martha was upset because she had to do all the work for the festivities, but Mary just sat with Jesus. Here's the thing: Jesus said what Mary did was the good part.
"And Jesus answered and said to her, 'Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.'" (Luke 10:41-42 NKJV)
Wow, just wow! Was Jesus telling her the same thing that He said to Martha? So, she wondered, did He mean she needed to stop being concerned with everything weighing her down and just be with Him? She instinctively knew she had to make an inward vow to read her Bible and pray every day from that day forward.
Many of us tend to be like Ellen, and thus, like Martha, do we not? I am guilty as charged! He has told me many times to chill and sit at His feet.
We are concerned about all areas of our lives that God has already told us He will handle. We only need to chill and then love Him and everyone else. If we do that, He has promised to care for our needs. Look again with me at Matthew 6:31-33 (NKJV). These are the words of Jesus:
"Therefore do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you."
