“With whatever is uppermost in your mind.” The doctor waited patiently for Becci to collect her thoughts.
“Well, he’s always been a bit reserved, though happy enough with his own company. He’s beginning to write, and he loves to draw, especially rockets. Anytime he gets his hands on crayons he draws a spaceship, or astronaut or planets. But he doesn’t talk!” Becci threw her hands up and let them flop on her lap
“Not at all?” The doctor frowned.
“Oh, he says ‘yes’ and ‘no’ and ‘please’ and ‘thank you’, but he points at things he wants, and waits for his brother to interpret. At school he barely responds when the teacher asks a question. Everyone else the class chatters away quiet happily – but Darren sits there silently drawing his rockets. Some of the other mums have started to wonder if he’s a bit – you know – backward.” Becci’s shoulders were slowly drooping at the memory.
“Are you more worried about Darren or what other people think? Children are all different, you know.”
“Maybe. But I wonder if I’ve done something to upset him – or not interacted enough with him.”
“Let’s go and meet the young lad.” The doctor opened the door to the children’s play area and motioned Becci through. Barely had she stepped out of the office when a little boy rushed at her, holding up an object made of bright plastic bricks. “Look mummy, Robbie and I made a rocket. We want to fly to the moon and Mars and see if there are aliens up there!”
Close behind the boy stood his father, beaming from ear to ear. “When Darren saw that Robbie was building a rocket, he suddenly got excited and started talking nineteen to the dozen. He’s not stopped since. It’s a relief to know he can do it!”
The doctor smiled too. “He just needed someone to take his passion for space seriously. There shouldn’t any more problems. In fact, now he’s started, you probably won’t be able to stop him.”
Becci just hugged her son tightly.

Good layout, easy to read, realistic wording of conversations. The problem was perhaps a bit too easily solved; I felt prepared to "work it through" but it was all over in a sentence or two. Life sometimes happens that way I guess...
Nice writing.
