What do I know of anything?
Will I delve into strands of fabled land?
Where everything is fine and dandy
Where toys galore await my touch,
Come roaring to life to merry land.
Will I step into my plush room and see posters?
Of those admired whose lives imagined
I am there to share –
The gaiety and the glitter!
Will I look back to youth once spent?
In affluence meeting one’s desires,
To laugh, to dream of nothing short
But the best a chosen mate to give.
I despair to think
Those toys can lose its shine
That beauty fades and thrills go bust
That love dies and laughter turns bitter.
One gets caught in the cracks of life.
Till one day I found myself
In a scavenger’s lot among the hills,
Where roofs and walls are plastic made
Shelter from wind, sun and rain.
When food is what a trashcan yields
And toys are caps, tin, and wood
Fashioned and held by grubby hands.
Could I walk amidst all these?
Broken steps and stunted lives.
Yet in this sorry land smiles are given
To me a stranger traipsing by;
What dreams they must have compared to mine.
Oh troubled self how dare you want
More than fate and fortune provide.
See the birds winged to trees and sky
Feel the breath of hope in simple lives
Sunshine does come after the rain
Sweet air hovers, water to thirst after.
Hold on fast to shelter known
In the loving shade that bursts to light
God so cares and gives - and I receive.
Oh magnificent to know!
